Few health insurance policies cover massage therapy as a preventative health care. Clinical massage therapy is usually covered by insurance policies if it is prescribed by a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). Some of those policies require prescriptions to be filled by health care providers (massage therapists) in their network. Call your health insurance company first to see what your coverage includes and requires.
Before ANY insurance will pay for therapeutic massage, you must provide proof from your physician that it is a medically necessary procedure.
Please have your physician write a prescription with the following information:
1) Diagnosis Codes (ICD-10 format).
2) Frequency and Duration of Treatments.
3) Total Number of Treatments.
4) Name and NPI# (Doctor's ID #).
5) State That "Massage Therapy is Medically Necessary".
If you or your physician have questions, please call (417) 719-1591.
